If you have a player or players that are really hard on themselves think about putting into place The Positive Promise. Players can’t say anything bad about themselves until they first say something good. So for instance, if a player strikes out and comes back to the dugout, before she can say “I stink” as a hitter, she must first say something good about her at-bat…I swung at a good pitch”, “I swung hard”, “I was really focused”, “I was watching the ball”, “I was balanced”. The player must start by saying something positive that’s true first before she can say anything negative. While this won’t eliminate players from tearing themselves apart it will help slow them down or delay their negative thinking and get them in the habit of trying to find something good in themselves.
